31st January 2014 – Pretoria – With entries pouring in for the Bestmed TuksRace taking place on Saturday 15th February, it is anticipated that numbers will top the field of approximately 13,000 participants in last year’s marathon.

As one of the largest and premier road running events in Gauteng, the Bestmed TuksRace is open to all participants. The event has grown in stature to attract some of the best athletes from South Africa and other African countries, as well as social runners, and wheelchair athletes.

The event, which will start and finish at LC De Villiers Sports Grounds at the University of Pretoria (Tuks), comprises 21.1km, 10km, 5km, and 1 km open race, as well as a wheelchair race. Participants also stand a chance to win R5, 000 in prize money if a new record is broken in the 21.1km and 10km categories
To celebrate Bestmed’s 50 h birthday this year, a range of spot prizes are also available in the different categories, including a luxurious weekend getaway for two to Botswana, and a range of bicycles for adults, children and toddlers, to name a few.

Alan Fritz, Executive Head: Sales, Marketing and Distribution at Bestmed comments, “To add sparkle and glitz to the event in line with our 50th birthday, we have invited 50 celebrities across all disciplines, from sports, fashion to television to attend the race in aid of Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA). Bestmed will donate R555 for each celebrity to this worthwhile cause, along with other proceeds from the event.”

This encourages individuals and families from all walks of life to proactively get involved to promote a healthy lifestyle, and prevent disease, while having fun.”

After a sneak preview of the entrants so far, TuksMarathon Club Chairman, Professor Vollie Spies, says, “With names like Nick Bester of Iron Man, Ultraman and Comrades’ fame, along with Luwis Masunda, Rutendo Nyahora, Sibusiso Nzima, Steven Mokoka and Myrette Filmalter, the challenge is on! Final registration is on the day of the race on Saturday, 15th February from 04:30 to 05:50.
